BBB warns Floridians to be prepared as Nicole comes through: Storm chasers and scams will follow By Better Business Bureau. November 8, 2022. Hurricane (Getty Image) Tropical Storm Nicole could hit Florida as a Category 1 Hurricane on Thursday. Better Business Bureau (BBB) encourages Floridians to prepare their homes and businesses for the possible threat of storm damage. BBB’s Florida Hurricane Guide is a one-stop resource page to help Floridians during hurricane season. The Florida Hurricane Guide has tips on disaster preparedness, recovery and repair, as well as information about government resources, storm chaser/home improvement scams and charity relief efforts, as well as resources for victims of Hurricane Ian. BBB receives hundreds of complaints every year concerning subpar work performed by contractors, and encourages consumers to take the time to properly research contractors to avoid creating a bigger problem. Unfortunately, the aftermath of a major storm typically also brings out many types of scams and unlicensed contractors who take advantage of those who have been victimized. Better Business Bureau is warning local residents that may be affected by Nicole to beware of out-of-town contractors soliciting business. It is common for out-of-town storm chasers to solicit business after storms. Disaster victims should never feel pressured to make a decision by an unknown contractor. Consumers should always: Document the damage to your property and possessions thoroughly; take pictures or video, if possible. Contact your insurance adjuster immediately and keep them updated of any changes. Check to make sure any contractors you are considering hiring are properly licensed by visiting www.myfloridalicense.com and have up-to-date workers compensation and liability insurance. Look for the BBB Accredited Business Seal; these companies are screened, monitored, licensed and approved by BBB Standards of Trust.
