Sandbags and Sand to Make Sandbags Now Available at Three Collier County Parks and in Immokalee Sand is available at three Collier County parks and one location in Immokalee for those interested in obtaining sandbags. There is a limit of 10 bags per person. Pre-made sandbags are available at North Collier Regional Park, 15000 Livingston Road, Naples, FL 34109. Two other Collier County parks and a location in Immokalee now have piles of sand and bags to make sandbags, but you need to bring your own shovel and/or trowel to fill the bags. The two parks are Donna Fiala Eagle Lakes Community Park, 11565 Tamiami Trail E., Naples, FL 34113 and Max A Hasse, Jr. Community Park, 3390 Golden Gate Boulevard West, Naples, FL 34120. The sandbag service will be available at the parks daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., supplies and weather permitting. The Immokalee location is 415 Sgt. Joe Jones Road. That location will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27, or as long as supplies are available and weather permits. Sandbags when properly filled and placed may divert water around, instead of through buildings. Sandbag construction does not guarantee a water-tight seal but is satisfactory for use in most situations. Burlap sacks and plastic sandbags (polypropylene) are standard types to use. Garbage bags are not recommended since they are too slick to stack. For additional information on sand and sandbag availability please contact the Collier County Road Maintenance Division at (239) 252-8924. Plantation Island Waterways Pre-Design Study Public Information Meeting ______________________________________________________________________________________ Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2022 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The Plantation Island Waterways Pre-Design Study Public Information Meeting will be held from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Everglades Community Center/Skating Rink, 205 Buckner Avenue. Everglades City, Fla. Residents, business representatives and visitors are welcome to attend this open house style meeting. A short slide show is planned that will run continuously and attendees may review it as well as the displays detailing the proposed project and to talk one-on-one with county staff and the county’s consultants. Displays are also planned to be posted on the county’s website at www.colliercountyfl.gov/stormwater prior to the meeting. In 2017, the severe winds and storm surges of Hurricane Irma deposited heavy amounts of vegetative debris and silt throughout the Plantation Island Waterways canal system leading to degradation of the water quality and navigability of the waterways on which the community relies. Plantation Island is a census-designated rural community with approximately two (2) miles of man-made and natural waterways. The waterways serve as stormwater conveyance and some navigability to the Barron River and neighboring tidal waters. In 2019, the county was awarded a grant of $312,500 to conduct a water restoration study of this system. County funds will cover the remainder of the project cost which is approximately $111,000. Based on the analysis and coordination completed during the study, the recommended alternative is to dredge the canals of Plantation Island and the entrance channel leading up Halfway Creek. This alternative provides ecological improvements comparable to the other alternatives that were studied while also providing the additional socio-economic benefits of unimpeded navigation to Plantation Island from the Chokoloskee Bay. Two or more members of the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) may be present and participate at this meeting. The subject matter of this meeting may be an item for discussion and action at a future BCC meeting. Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or other reasonable accommodations to participate in this proceeding, should contact the Collier County Facilities Management Division located at 3335 Tamiami Trail E., Naples, Florida 34112, or 239-252-8380 as soon as possible. Such reasonable accommodations will be provided at no cost to the individual. For more information, call the Transportation Management Services Department at 239-252-5728. All interested members of the public are invited to attend a public information meeting on the Golden Gate Parkway over Santa Barbara Canal Bridge Replacement Project from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 5 at Golden Gate Community Center Auditorium, 4701 Golden Gate Parkway, Naples, FL 34116. The contractor, who plans to start removing the old bridges and building the new bridge in October, will share the construction schedule and attendees will learn how traffic will be maintained and managed during construction. The existing four-lane bridge (two eastbound travel lanes and two westbound travel lanes) was originally constructed in 1971. It is nearing the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced. Two adjacent existing pedestrian bridges installed in 2008 will also be removed and the new bridge will include two 12-foot-wide sidewalks, one in each direction. These improvements are anticipated to enhance mobility and maintain connectivity for vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians. Approximately one year is expected to be needed for the construction. The estimated bridge replacement cost is $3.9 million which includes design, permitting, engineering inspection services and construction. Two or more members of the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) may be present and participate at this meeting.
