Naples, FL, October 20, 2021 – Gary Lee McMillan passed away on Oct. 16, 2021 at the age of 64 while cycling near his home in Fort Myers, Fla. His life was cut short in the early that morning after he was hit by a vehicle from behind and thrown into the road. The investigation is still ongoing. Gary’s family has asked Naples Pathways Coalition to accept donations from mourning friends and family in his memory to further our mission to create a safe, walkable, and bikeable community. Gary was born on June 17, 1957 in Cañon City, Colo. He attended Colorado State University and earned a degree in Physical Education. He loved being active and had a passion for fitness, nature, and his family. He was a proud father and grandfather who loved making people laugh with his quirky sense of humor. His positive attitude and kind heart will be missed by everybody who crossed his path. Gary was an avid cyclist for more than 30 years and was passionate about staying active and healthy. He recently moved to Fort Myers and enjoyed exploring all the outdoor activities available here. He will be greatly missed by his family and everyone who was lucky enough to cross his path. His family urges drivers to pay attention while driving and to pay extra care when sharing the road with cyclists. “Don’t drive distracted, even if you look down for just a second, that could be the difference between life and death. Gary’s life was cut short unnecessarily and that one second changed his and his family’s lives forever,” Laura Hedelson, Gary’s partner said. He is survived by his two children: Jessica Hughes, of Atlanta; and May McMillan, of Omaha; his mother Susan Adamic of Cañon City; brother Joe McMillan of Florence; grandchildren Hudson and Henley, and his life partner Laura Hedelson of Fort Myers. Memorial services are still to be determined. In lieu of flowers, Mr. McMillan’s family has asked the community to please donate to the Naples Pathways Coalition on his behalf. Donations can be mailed to Naples Pathways Coalition at 539 Fifth Avenue South, #464, Naples, FL 34102, or online at www.NaplesPathways.org/Donate and note “In Memory of Gary McMillan” in the memo or comment field. ~~~~~~
