FORT MYERS, Fla. – October 6, 2021 – The Southwest Florida Free Pain Clinic has been having remarkable success treating patients with “Post COVID Syndrome” or “Long COVID,” as some refer to it. Medical providers at the Clinic use Functional Medicine, a systems biology-based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease to effectively treat the whole person. Each symptom or differential diagnosis may be one of many contributing to an individual’s illness. People with relatively mild COVID-19 usually recover within 2-3 weeks of onset. However, many have reported debilitating symptoms that last for weeks or months, a health issue called Post COVID Syndrome. Common symptoms include breathlessness, cough, heart palpitations, exercise intolerance, extreme fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and brain fog. Early research suggests that women, people who smoked, were overweight or obese, of lower socioeconomic status, or had been admitted to the hospital, all have a higher risk of persistent symptoms after having COVID-19. "People with COVID symptoms that are not resolving, the so-called Post COVID Syndrome or Long COVID, can be diagnosed and effectively treated using a Functional Medicine approach. Often, the symptoms resemble those seen in Biotoxin Illness (Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome), which has been postulated to be activated by the coronavirus. Patients then start reacting to their water-damaged environments. We have been effectively treating these patients with a scientifically validated detoxification program that we provide to our patients at no cost to them. Most are restored to health and no longer have these symptoms," said Alan Gruning, DO, Executive/Medical Director of the Southwest Florida Free PainClinic and Medical Director of the International Center for Health and Wellness. The Southwest Florida Free Pain Clinic provides no-cost care for individuals without health insurance. Treatment is offered to those who suffer from chronic or acute pain without the use of opioids or other prescription pain medication. Patients must also meet income requirements to qualify for services. To learn more about the Southwest Florida Free Pain Clinic, visit www.FreePainClinic.org.
