The Ware Bluegrass Foundation Supports Florida Lions Eye Clinic’s Vision Related Programs The Florida Lions Eye Clinic is pleased to announce it has received a generous grant from the Ware Bluegrass Foundation. The Foundation has committed to three years of funding, $20,000 each year, with $10,000 directly supporting the Clinic’s Surgery Fund. “We are so appreciative of the support the Ware Bluegrass Foundation has given the Clinic in the past and its commitment to our future success,” said Robin Goldstone Garcia, FLEC Executive Director. “The donation toward our Surgery Fund will help our patients get the eye surgeries they otherwise could not afford.” FLEC’s in-house state-of-the-art eye care services include minor surgical treatment for eye diseases such as glaucoma and pterygium, which involves the removal of a growth on the surface of the eye resulting from prolonged exposure to wind, sunlight, smoke, dust and pollen. Many of the FLEC’s patients are referred to outside specialists that require surgery beyond the Clinic’s capability. These surgeries include retina detachments, cataracts and conditions that require eye injections. In either case, there is no charge to the patient and all costs are covered by the Clinic’s Surgery Fund. The Ware Bluegrass Foundation was established in 1999 by Jack and Alice Ware, both of who were blind during their lifetimes. Recently, the foundation elected to narrow its focus by supporting organizations that maintain ongoing vision-related programs. The Board also began to focus its support on organizations that provide essential vision-related services in Naples and Southwest Florida. After board members became familiar with the mission and operations of the Florida Lions Eye Clinic and the impact it had on Southwest Florida residents with special needs, the Board decided to include the clinic as a long-term grant recipient. About the Florida Lions Eye Clinic The Florida Lions Eye Clinic offers free, state-of-the-art, eye care to children, families and adults who are underserved, do not have medical insurance, and meet the qualifying guidelines. In collaboration with Lions Clubs throughout the state, the Clinic also brings onsite screenings and clinical care to many of the underserved areas in southwest Florida. Serving over 2,000 patients annually, the Clinic relies on the generosity of its supporters and their donations of time, talent, and treasure.
