The Neighborhood Health Clinic (Clinic) – a volunteer-driven nonprofit organization providing Collier County’s working, uninsured residents affordable medical and dental care – welcomes Linda Penniman, William R. Johnson and Dr. James V. Talano to the 2019-2020 Board of Directors, effective October 1, 2019. A former fifth-grade teacher with real estate and media sales experience, Linda Penniman served on the Naples City Council from 2014 until elected as Vice Mayor by her peers in 2016. She won re-election to the Council in 2018 with 31% of the vote before retiring to focus on her family. The civic leader’s diverse experience also includes leading a large homeowner’s association and serving on local government advisory boards addressing land-use policies, as well as water and beach quality. William R. Johnson is the retired Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of the H. J. Heinz Company, only the fifth in the company’s history. Johnson is active in numerous community organizations, has served as a member of the national Athena Awards committee, co-chaired and chaired capital campaigns for the United Way of Western Pennsylvania and a Ronald McDonald House in Pittsburgh, as well local events throughout PA. He received the inaugural Global Visionary Award (2006) from Helen Keller International for Heinz’s micronutrient program for combating childhood anemia and the Marco Polo Award, the highest honor awarded by the Chinese government on foreign business leaders, for Heinz’s support of the development of the Chinese food industry. An innovator, Johnson also commissioned a study on leadership that resulted in the book “Preparing CEO’s for Success” (2010) with proceeds supporting Ronald McDonald House Charities, Inc. James V. Talano MD, MM, FACC is an internationally recognized expert in the field of non-invasive cardiology with diverse experience in cardiovascular care and management. Throughout his career Talano has served as Director of Cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic Naples, Director of Cardiology Graphics and Chief of Clinical Cardiology in the Section of Cardiology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Lester B. Knight Professor of Medicine at Northwestern University Medical School and at Lakeside Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Additionally, he was Chief of Cardiology and the Lassen Professor of Medicine at Tulane University Medical School and is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association while serving on the Council of Clinical Cardiology. All three bring their extensive skills and experience to serve on the Clinic’s Board of Directors as Adriana Buitrago and Dr. Robert Payne complete their terms of office. The 20-member Board supports the charity’s mission to deliver quality medical and dental care to low-income, working but uninsured Collier County adults, using a volunteer professional staff in a caring and supportive environment. Together, they determine, review and approve major policies while supporting the nonprofit’s staff and approximately 250 physicians, 35 dentists, 6 hygienists, 100 nurses and 300 non-medical personnel who, in 2018 alone, provided more than 11,000 patient visits and in excess of 27,095 patient procedures for Collier County men and women in-need.
