Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is leading a summer diaper drive to benefit families in South Florida. All sizes of diapers are welcome, from newborn to size six. Diapers must be new and in original packaging. In Southwest Florida, diapers can be dropped off at the Nicklaus Children’s Resource Center, 659 5th Avenue South on Fridays and Saturdays between July 19 and August 10 (10 a.m. – 5 p.m.). Additional drop-off days and times can be arranged by calling 239.263.2223. Bring your diapers to the Donate-A-Diaper Drive Kick-off Brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, July 19, at the Nicklaus Children’s Resource Center, 659 5th Avenue South. Stop in at your convenience to enjoy complimentary coffee, juice, muffins, fruit and more. The expense of diapers is an enormous financial strain for many families struggling to make ends meet. One in three American families have to choose between diapers and other basic needs, including food, medication and housing. Donated diapers will be distributed to organizations that help directly solve the diaper need issue locally, including Baby Basics - Collier County, which provides free diapers on a consistent basis to low-income working families, and Early Steps Program in Lee County, part of the Health Planning Council of Southwest Florida. Diapers will also be delivered to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami where more than 60 percent of the families receiving care are on Medicaid or are uninsured. On average, each day four children from Southwest Florida travel to Miami to be admitted to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital for serious, complicated medical issues. In 2018, $3.5 million of uncompensated care was provided to families from Lee and Collier counties. Special note: The new Fetal Care Center at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, with its 10-bed special delivery unit, is now open. Healthy moms are now able to deliver their babies with expected complex issues so the newborns can receive immediate interventions and moms can remain close by. https://www.nicklauschildrens.org/news-and-events/press-releases/special-delivery-unit-for-high-risk-infants-opens
