NAPLES, FLA. — JUNE 5, 2019 – Opera Naples announces its 2019-2020 Season with productions of Puccini’s La bohème, a double-bill of Derrick Wang’s Scalia/ Ginsburg and Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury with orchestration by Derrick Wang, and Mozart’s Don Giovanni, and recitals by international stars, Jennifer Rowley, soprano, and rising heldentenor, Issachah Savage. The season lineup brings the very best in musical entertainment to the southwest coast with a combination of opera, recitals, chamber music, and one-of-a-kind special events. This is the first full season for Timothy Todd Simmons, Opera Naples’ Executive Director, who arrived in Naples just four months ago. “It’s exciting to be a part of such a widely varied season. Our plans for 2019-2020 will provide a wealth of musical entertainment for Naples, from full-staged operas and intimate chamber performance to operettas and jazz & blues, as well as master classes and special informative previews and events. Ramón (Artistic Director Ramón Tebar) and I share a passion for excellence, and we are committed to bringing the very best to the Naples and Southwest Coast community,” said Simmons. Artistic Director, Ramón Tebar, agreed. “We continue to attract internationally acclaimed artists of the highest caliber and are thrilled to bring these musical experiences to the Southwest Florida area. It’s a very exciting time at Opera Naples; Todd couldn’t have arrived at a better time. Expect great things at Opera Naples,” predicted Tebar. OPERA NAPLES: THE 2019-2020 SEASON Three Operas, Two Magnificent Concerts, and Opera Naples Academy Presentations at the Center of the Season OPERA PRODUCTIONS Puccini’s La bohème Wednesday, December 11 and Thursday, December 12, 2019, at 7:30 pm at Artis-Naples Hayes Hall. Sung in Italian with English supertitles. A bittersweet love story, the tale follows a group of young Paris bohemians through laughter, romance, and, ultimately, tragedy. The story is universal and the music timeless. Maestro Ramón Tebar conducts a magnificent ensemble of singing actors and the Naples Philharmonic in one of the world’s most popular operas. Tickets are $25, $55, $85, $110, and $125. $3 per ticket processing fee. Double Bill: Scalia/Ginsburg, an Opera by Derrick Wang and Trial by Jury by Gilbert and Sullivan with orchestration by Derrick Wang Friday, January 24 and Saturday, January 25, 2020, at 7:30 pm at the Wang Opera Center Sung in English with projected text. All Rise! January brings a unique double-bill as Opera Naples goes to court. Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury started the string of hit operettas that captivated Victorian London. A “breach of promise” case leads to legal hi-jinks and court-ordered laughter in this gem of lyric comedy. Just as clever—and charming—is Derrick Wang’s Scalia/Ginsburg, a “fiercely entertaining crash course on the U.S. Constitution and the people who uphold it” (Broad Street Review). Inspired by the unlikely friendship of the titular U.S. Supreme Court Justices, this “perfect…jewel” (Opera Today) was first heard in 2013 at the Supreme Court—and the verdict was unanimous: Scalia/Ginsburg is a hit. The Los Angeles Times wrote: “Could we please make it a constitutional requirement that no one can be sworn into office in the White House or Congress without having first seen Scalia/Ginsburg?” A wonderful glimpse into the lives of these two famous Americans. Tickets are $35, $59, $78, and $95*. $3 per ticket processing fee. *VIP includes backstage champagne reception to Meet the Artists. Mozart’s Don Giovanni Wednesday, April 29, and Thursday, April 30, 2020, at 7:30 pm at Artis-Naples Hayes Hall. Tickets are $25, $55, $85, $110, and $125. $3 per ticket processing fee. The season concludes with two performances of Mozart’s masterpiece, Don Giovanni. Mozart and Da Ponte’s re-telling of the Don Juan story is, without question, one of the operatic canon’s greatest masterpieces. The brilliant juxtaposition of comedy and poignant human pain make the opera’s story as current today as it was in the 18th century as the libertine Don meets his well-deserved demise. Mozart’s brilliant score and Da Ponte’s witty libretto provide us a brilliant—and timely—evening in the theatre. Tickets are $25, $55, $85, $110, and $125. $3 per ticket processing fee. 2019-2020 Offers Two Opera Stars Concerts Jennifer Rowley, Soprano, Ramón Tebar, Piano Friday, November 15, 2019, at 7:30 pm at the Wang Opera Center. Her substantial star is certainly on its ascent: in the coming season, she will make debuts at Dallas Opera, Opernhaus Zürich, Opera Australia, and Opéra de Marseille as well as an important role debut at the Metropolitan Opera in Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur. Tickets are $35, $59, $78, and $95*. $3 per ticket processing fee. *VIP includes backstage champagne reception to Meet the Artists.
