Marco Island, March 1, 2019: - Marco Island Center for the Arts invites the public to enjoy the “Pastel Society of SWF Show” on March 4 – 26, 2019 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The SWF Pastel Society was established in January 2003 because of resurgence in the interest and use of this soft pastel medium. Pastels are best known for their superior quality of light achieved through the use of pure pigment with reflective qualities not found in other mediums. Pastels have the power of color and stability. It is the most permanent of all mediums because it never cracks, darkens or yellows. Historically, the presence of pastel can be found in works of art from about 1500 A.D. Leonardo, the most prominent proponent of this art form, is credited with the first known use of pastel in his 1499 portrait of Isabella D’Este. However, Edgar Degas is the artist most widely recognized for transforming pastel from a sketching book into a major artistic medium. “Pastel painting blossomed with his touch and his works have inspired countless artists.” Degas protégé, Mary Cassatt, introduced the Impressionists and pastel to her wealthy friends in Philadelphia and Washington, and thus to the United States. The exhibition will be on display in the Lauritzen & Rush Galleries. The opening reception called “2nd Tuesday” is from 5:30 – 7:00 pm on March 12th. No reservations are required. There is a suggested $10 donation for non-members. In the La Petite Galerie, the work of watercolor artist Wanda Coady is being exhibited. As an avid traveler she has journeyed across the world painting inspiring locations, taking photos and sketching for later creations. She works exclusively in watercolor. Her paintings have been published in a variety of books. Wanda Coady has also been commissioned to create artwork of landmarks in five Illinois cities. Save the Date!
