Marco Island, August 24, 2018: - Marco Island Center for the Arts invites interested students to apply to the popular Young Artists Academy. This prominent program offers free art classes for middle and high school students who are talented and are interested in creating art. To be eligible for the program, a student must be in Grades 6 – 12. Also, grade appropriate home-schooled children can apply to join the Young Artist Academy. This well admired program has a limited number of spaces available and will be filled on a first to apply basis. All applications are date and time stamped so it is advisable that students submit their application forms as quickly as possible. Applications will not be accepted after September 24, 2018. Classes are offered in clay, painting and comic book creation. Each accepted student will participate in two of the mediums, and will rank their art class preferences in their applications. The Art Center will do its best to honor these requests. Each set of classes runs four weeks. Young Artist Academy classes take place on Saturday afternoons from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. The following are this year’s dates: •September 29 •October 6, 13, 20, 27 •November 3, 10, 17 Young Artist Academy provides students the opportunity to learn techniques and further develop their skills. The classes are taught by the following highly qualified teaching artists. Rebecca Ferguson – BA in Art from Florida Gulf Coast University with her main focus on ceramics. She is exceptionally accomplished in extruded forms, sculptural ceramics, and wheel thrown functional ware, kiln work and raku firing. Bobby Monroe – The Miami born artist and filmmaker is a graduate of the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. He has also studied at the School of Visual Arts in NYC, Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota and the Miami Ad School. He also designs cartoon sharks that save the planet. Tara O’Neill – An Award-winning artist and 40 year resident, Tara has shown her work from Naples Florida to Naples Italy, including stops in Ireland, Central America and stateside. Tara holds a BFA in Studio Arts from Oxford University/Brookes College England. There is no fee for the students in the Young Artists Academy. However, accepted students are expected to fulfill their class commitment. All artists want their work exhibited. New this year, students who attend all eight sessions will be eligible to enter one piece of artwork into an exhibition that will take place in Marco Island Center for the Arts’ atrium from November 19-20, 2018. The work will be judged and first, second and third place winners will receive cash prizes. This artwork will also be featured in the Art Center’s December newsletter.
