Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Foundation is recruiting men and women in Southwest Florida who have a passion for children and an interest in helping families receive the very best medical care for their children. Volunteer “Ambassadors” are needed to staff the Nicklaus Children’s Resource Center, 659 5th Avenue South, Naples, when it opens in October and to attend local events to represent Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and its programs and services. Anyone 18 or older interested in learning more about the volunteer opportunity can contact Julie Pedretti, Area Director of Community Relations, at [email protected] or (786) 481.8511. Founded in 1950 as Variety Children’s Hospital, the Miami-based hospital was renamed Miami Children’s Hospital in 1983. In 2015, the hospital assumed the Nicklaus name, in recognition of a generous pledge from golf icon Jack Nicklaus, his wife Barbara and their Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation. Nicklaus Children’s Hospital provides specialized programs and services to children with complex health issues. As an indicator of the depth of specialized pediatric care, each year, more than 2,000 children are transported—by ambulance or helicopter—from other children’s hospitals from across the world to receive life-saving care at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Nicklaus Children’s is a national and international leader in many pediatric specialties including cardiology, oncology (cancer), neurology/neurosurgery, fetal diagnostics and treatment. In fact, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital has six pediatric subspecialty programs ranked by U.S. News and World Report in its 2018-19 “Best Children’s Hospital” rankings. No other hospital in Florida has more ranked pediatric programs. The services provided by Nicklaus Children’s Hospital are complementary to pediatric services available in Southwest Florida, providing care to children with complex medical issues requiring specialty services – such as surgery for congenital heart defects, epilepsy and brain tumors – and pediatric subspecialists to provide second opinions. On average, every day two children from the area travel to Miami with their families to be admitted to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital for specialized pediatric medical care. Locally, the Children’s Urgent Care Center at Livingston and Pine Ridge roads is staffed by pediatricians who are employed by Pediatric Specialists of America, Nicklaus Children’s Health System’s physician enterprise. The Nicklaus Children’s Resource Center is scheduled open in the heart of Naples, on 5th Avenue South, during the first week of October. The Resource Center will use high-tech displays and videos to showcase the hospital’s programs and services. For more information about the Nicklaus Children’s Ambassador program, contact Julie Pedretti, Area Director of Community Relations, at [email protected] or (786) 481.8511.
