Women’s Foundation of Collier County awards grant to St. Matthew’s House to help senior women experiencing homelessness Naples, FL — July 6, 2023 — St. Matthew’s House has received a $30,000 grant from the Women’s Foundation of Collier County (WFCC), a fund of the Collier Community Foundation. These funds will be used to support the growing number of senior women experiencing homelessness with shelter and wraparound support services. St. Matthew’s House is a non-profit organization that provides faith-based innovative solutions to help those experiencing homelessness and food insecurity. It provides the only homeless shelters in Collier County — Campbell Lodge and Immokalee Friendship House — that provide critical resources to those experiencing homelessness. St. Matthew’s House shelters 400 men, women and children every night in its shelters. In recent years, St. Matthew’s House has begun serving an increasing number of senior women who often have nowhere else to go. St. Matthew’s House provides shelter and services to help them begin moving from a position of crisis to one of stability. St. Matthew’s House helps them to formulate a plan with strategies and resources needed to transition from the shelter program to independence. Case managers facilitate referrals and applications to affordable housing options in the community, including the Collier County Housing Authority, transitional and supportive housing programs in the area, and housing assistance through the Hunger and Homeless Coalition and NAMI. For shelter residents requiring ongoing services, St. Matthew’s House operates the Wolfe Apartments which provide affordable transitional or permanent supportive housing to disabled and low-to-moderate income populations. The goal of the St. Matthew’s House shelter program is to eliminate such obstacles and increase access to the resources that every individual in our community needs to thrive. “St. Matthew’s House is grateful to the Women’s Foundation of Collier County and Collier Community Foundation for this greatly needed support for our programs to help senior women placed at profound risk by homelessness,” says St. Matthew’s House CEO Steve Brooder. “The need for services for senior women experiencing homelessness has increased significantly with many experiencing first time homelessness. Rising inflation, shortage of low-income housing, and the financial and physical challenges of aging are just some of the factors creating new, life-impacting hardships for senior women in our community.” The Collier Community Foundation awards grants through a competitive application and review process. Selected organizations receive grant dollars from the Foundation’s Community Impact Fund. This fund is made up of donors who believe in the Community Foundation’s ability to identify and grant funds to provide support for the community’s most current shelter needs. About St. Matthew's House St. Matthew's House is a faith-based 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that provides innovative solutions to help those experiencing homelessness, hunger, substance abuse, and poverty in Southwest Florida.
